  1. Sigmund Freud (1856¬≠1939) was the Austrian neurologist who developed 
  2. psychoanalysis. He used hypnosis and free association to discover 
  3. repressed events and emotions in patients, often of a sexual nature. In 
  4. 1900 he published The Interpretation of Dreams , laying out the 
  5. fundamental concepts of psychoanalytic treatment. Freud‚Äôs theories 
  6. initially met with hostility, but eventually flourished in modified forms as 
  7. a means of treating psychoses and neuroses. He is considered one of 
  8. the great creative minds of the modern age.
